i'm having to consider my first midi foot controller to control a bevy of gear. effects, drum machine, echo pro , filter pro, etc, on and on....and on and on....... the more i can get underfoot the better. i have a pedal for the edpz . ahh , an abbr. for edp's . that's so e - d - p - z ..........get it...............corny huh........... anyway somethang that can footle (handle) all the junk i've got going on would be great. i'm leaning toward the ground control pro. i'm just wondering whether it can do what i want it to do which is probably not what it's intended to do. it's surely designed for sane instead of deranged. any responses from anyone familiar with that unit or of something more flexable would be would greatly be appreciated.

Hi, I'm not much of a piano player but I do a bit of piano looping.I have a pair of uprights that I use.One is a regularly tuned piano, the other is a 'prepared piano' that I've tuned microtonally (which pissed my wife of initially, she's a traditionalist).I use LDC's on both of them into some api pre's that I have and then line level into my console.I have an Echo Pro set up on an aux that I send the signal to pre fader (with the channel fader zeroed) and the aux is then routed back to a channel and sent to protools. I also use a couple of other looping devices (MPXG2, Vortex, DL4).Everything is on old fashioned TT type patchbays so I can route anything to anything- there are a bunch of harmonisers that I use a lot on piano- they don't cope with the playing chords on the piano terribly well, which is a sound I love, so I'll set the harmoniser to 100% wet and do things like chain two in series, pitch one up and octave, and another down an octave- so it comes back to concert pitch but fails to track properly. I call it 'drunken piano'.Another loop environment I have is taking boundary mics of the pianos, feeding the room sound into my outboard reverb units set to be extremely wet, modulated and with long delays times (5s and above). Depending on the mic choice you get very dark or very bright modulating reverb washes. I don't make them much of a feature in my tracks- they get used for background noises in tracks and especially for links between sections when I can't find something more compositionally relevant. You can hear some of the ambience looping in the background of this short guitar loop:http://www.lotusthrone.com/Scape1.mp3I'm a throat singer and will position myself over the piano strings and throat sing against the strings and capture thathttp://www.jamesrichmond.com/throat_80bpm.mp3 has the throat singing against string looping and the background noises are loops of microtonal piano patterns fed into protools and modified with some soundtoys plugins.I'll see if I can find some that sounds more like piano- I tend to modify and filter the audio a lot.It isn't high tech by any means- but works for me.The pianos are in different rooms- I have long cable runs and control the hardware remotely using Apple's remote desktop. There is a Logic environment that I use to send program changes to the echo pro to control it.Any desk changes require sneaker-net (yes, walking back to the control room). Not ideal but I don't have the room to have both pianos in my live room.Sometimes I'll just play direct to dat or some other 2 track recorder (ipod) and then use the audio as 'tape loops' that get fed into different pieces of hardware or software. The main thing is flexibility.Regards, Jim RichmondOn Sep 27, 2007, at 9:23 AM, The woodshed wrote: Hi There Can anyone give some tips on looping an acoustic piano, both grand and upright? Wow...I go out for a couple of hours and get a shedload of replies. Thanks ppl.Behringer FCB1010 - $150 - Cheap, reasonably flexible, but large. 10 functions per bank. Silent switches. I had a look at the manual- I thought there were only 2 programmable switches that I could assign midi note numbers to it and the rest of the switches selected patch numbers. Is it more flexible than this?I can live without power over midi as it has an integrated powersupply.I usually avoid Behringer due to build quality issues- how do ppl find this? Digital Music Ground Control Pro - $400 - Compact, rugged, expensive. Noisy switches. More powerful than the FCB in some ways, less in others. 8 or 12 functions per bank depending on how you configure it. I have the original Ground Control and it is frustrating as hell as I can assign controller numbers to each of the top line of pedals BUT because they are controller numbers that you cannot specify a value for the ECHO PRO doesn't quite understand what is going on.For Rec/Play/Overdub I have to press the button twice, which makes seemless looping a big PITA. Rev and 1/2 speed are a single press though because they do not respond differently to a 0 or 127 value.I thought of getting the DL4 pedal version but it only has 14 secs of memory and shares a button for 1/2 speed and reverse, which is where I do most of my work with it.I also have an ADA midi pedal but that is the one where I have to bank up and down to get to different functions. All I want is 6 configurable buttons.Maybe an EDP is the way to go instead? The search continues.Regards, Jim Richmond

Just an update for you all in case anyone was curious.I ended up picking up a Line 6 DL4 and simplifying my pedal-board rather than continuing to use the Echo Pro live.It cuts down the number of things I have to carry to rehearsals- now I just carry a guitar, Fender Prosonic combo and the pedal-board.No more racks, everything is at my feet- I can deal with the double function button for 1/2 speed and reverse and it is all good. The 14 second memory hasn't bothered me so far.I'll still do all my studio looping with the Echo Pro, Lexicon Jamman and the Lexicon MPXG2 but for live this is working for me.Many thanks to all that offered assistance.Jim RichmondOn Sep 14, 2007, at 11:13 AM, James Richmond wrote:Hi all, I use an Echo Pro for my looping- simple stuff really, no undo required but I do use reverse and 1/2 speed all the time. the FCB1010 has been a great pedal for me. i've used one for almost 5 years, although i had to replace it last year when i accidentally blew it up (european power + no coffee that morning)i had the occasional problem with junk midi messages (i.e. messages being sent that are not programmed - i caught these in my midi monitoring app). but after getting a new eprom from behringer, those issues disappeared.their manual is hard to understand, but user groups have spawned as a result.one confusing thing is the way behringer and people talk about SWITCHES and BUTTONS.- this i how i think of it: each patch (a patch being all the messages contained in a single button press) is made up of activated switches- the possible switches in a patch are: 1 midi note, 5 program changes, 2 controller changes, 2 expression- so, in other words, you can send, all at once, in a single press of a button: 1 midi note + 5 program changes + 2 controller changes + whatever each expression pedal is set to (i don't use the pedals)- each of those switches can send midi messages on a different channel, so you can talk to a bunch of devices simultaneously- and if you have, what is it, 10 banks with 10 buttons each... then that is er, 100 possible midi notes, 500 possible PC messages, etc...hope i didn't get anything wrong there...so some limitations are: - since there is only 1 midi note switch, that means you can send notes to only one device.- with 2 CC switches, you can send to 2 different devices.-(well you can send wherever you like, but obvious chaos would result if everything was on the same channel!)so if you have multiple devices to control and they ONLY respond to midi note commands (?), then you're out of luck (UNLESS one of those devices is on a computer...because you could use a conversion app like midipipe to change PC message on a channel to note messages). but i don't have devices like that.i talk to my electrix repeaters with PC and CC messages and the computer with Notes.is that too much information???-zoeOn Sep 14, 2007, at 12:34 PM, James Richmond wrote:Wow...I go out for a couple of hours and get a shedload of replies. Thanks ppl.Behringer FCB1010 - $150 - Cheap, reasonably flexible, but large. 10 functions per bank. Seriously Peter, you only get LD at work? I won't tell anyone :-) I bet there are anyone of a number of guys on this list. who could help you out with your behringer/ Line 6 rack looper issue. To start with the behringer will do Midi PC, CC , note messages, and you might try CC or notes rather than PC change messages which are more limited. You can get it to respond like a good ol DL-4, on steroids that way...yummy..... An FCB1010 strait from the factory might have all kinds of conflicting combinations of PC CC and note messages already on it. It will take some reprogramming of the FCB . and If you have Skype at home, You might even get someone to talk you through it, you might even throw a little L$ve their way for doing it. Timeless by Abercrombie, an all time favorite. The Dude abides fo sho, try not to be out of the office as much ok???:-) BillBelow are some midi implementation charts taken right off the L6 website for the Echo Prohttp://line6.com/data/l/c0a8090bf777404f9fa803ddf/application/pdf/Echo%20Pro%20User%20Manual%20-%20English.pdfAt this point, you’re probably saying to yourself, “How can I possibly play and hit thosebuttons at the same time? This is stupid!” Well, stupid is as stupid does, and ourmommas didn’t raise no dummies. You can also control the Looper with MIDI ProgramChanges, MIDI Continuous Controllers, or MIDI Notes, so that, with pretty muchwhatever controller you’re using, you can use it to start, stop, and otherwise mess aboutwith your Echo Pro’s Looper. There’s a complete list of what controls what in theAppendix at the back of this manual.Appendices: MIDI Implementation - Program ChangeMIDI Implementation -Program ChangeProgram ChangeAssignment000 Enable Bypass001 Program 1… …099 Program 99100 Ignored101 Looper Rec/Play/Stop/Play/Stop102 Looper Rec/Stop/Play/Stop/Play103 Looper Record Only104 Looper Overdub Only105 Looper Stop Only106 Looper Play/Stop107 Looper Play Once108 Looper Half Speed109 Looper Reverse110 Ignored111 Tube Echo112 Tape Echo113 Multi-head114 Sweep Echo115 Analog Echo116 Analog w/Mod117 Lo Res Delay118 Digital Delay119 Digital w/Mod120 Echo Platter121 Stereo Delays122 Ping Pong123 Reverse124 Dynamic Delay125 Auto-Volume Echo126 Loop Sampler (Reset)127 IgnoredA • 2Appendices: MIDI Implementation - Continuous Controller & Note FunctionsMIDI Implementation -Continuous Controller & Note FunctionsCont.ControllerMIDI NoteNumberEcho Pro ControlReceivedValue RangeTransmittedValue RangeCC# 04 N/A Expression Pedal 0 - 127 0 to 127CC# 28 62 (D4) Play/Stop 0 - 63=Stop64 - 127=PlayNo TransmitCC# 36 67 (G4) Half Speed 0 - 63= Normal64 - 127= HalfNo TransmitCC# 50 60 (C4) Record/Overdub 0 - 63= Overdub64 - 127= RecordNo TransmitCC# 64 N/A Tap Button Tap = 127 Tap = 127CC# 65 N/A Note Value 0 - 127 0 to127CC# 66 N/A Time Knob 0 - 127 0 to 127CC# 67 N/A Repeats Knob 0 - 127 0 to 127CC# 68 N/A Tweak Knob 0 - 127 0 to 127CC# 69 N/A Tweez Knob 0 - 127 0 to 127CC# 76 N/A Mix Knob 0 - 127 0 to 127CC# 77 N/A Bypass Button 0 - 63 0 to 63CC# 78 N/A Effect Model Select 0-15 0-15CC# 80 64 (E4) Play Once 0 - 63= Normal64 - 127= OnceNo TransmitCC# 81 70 (A#4) Stop Only Stop=127 No TransmitCC# 82 65 (F4) Overdub Only Overdub=127 No TransmitCC# 83 61 (C#4) Rec/Play/Stop/Play/Stop Advance=127 No TransmitCC# 84 Rec/Stop/Play/Stop/Play Advance=127 No TransmitCC# 85 69 (A4) Reverse 0 - 63= Normal64 - 127= ReverseNo TransmitN/A 66 (F#4) Record Only N/A N/AN/A 68 (G#4) Play Only N/A N/AN/A 71 (B4) Loop Reset N/A N/AA • 3

PC, CC , note messages, and you might try CC or notes rather than PC change messages which are more limited. The Dude abides fo sho, try not to be out of the office as much ok???:-) BillBelow are some midi implementation charts taken right off the L6 website for the Echo Pro 30:

it's weird and seems to only be a bug because im doing the same thing and getting different results. but i might also be doing it wrong, i am using the looper reset (PC126) function to clear the loop and start fresh each time.im simply pressing PC101 to record (with halfspeed and reverse off), then pressing it again to play the loop and then trying halfspeed. most of the time it plays halfspeed but sometimes the light comes on and does nothing, then when i press it again normal has become 2xspeed. i then use PC126 to reset looper and get rid of loop.i did some further testing and have been using MIDI PC 105 "looper stop only" according to my manual, to record.... go figure?i press PC105 to record, then i press my PC101 button, which plays the loop. using it in this fashion, i'm yet to have halfspeed screwup... when i stop the loop by pressing PC101 again i can press PC105 and it will begin recording a fresh loop. if i press it while a loop is playing it will overdube, so seems to cover me as a "record" button, and no need to wipe my loop as i was previously doing.so of my 5 buttons i have the following:sw1 = PC105 stop (but it actually arms new recording or overdubs if current loop playing)sw2 = PC101 rec/play/stop/play...sw3 = PC102 rec/stop/play/stop...sw4 = PC108 halfspeedsw5 = PC109 reversethis is working and im settling on it for the time being but it begs more questions like, why is the PC105 command listed in the manual as "stop only", arming the looper record function... is my firmware buggy or does my unit have a screw loose.if theres anyone who uses or has used the echo pro as a looper, what midi setup did you use to record, play, and clear loops?i have a support ticket with line6 but it's been several days.. legacy products etc.On Tue, Mar 31, 2015 at 3:50 AM, andy butler <akbutler@tiscali.co.uk> wrote:

too much gear to think of acquiring new stuff unfortunately.after some further research, i've uncovered that my echopro is running firmware v1.10 so it must be a very early unit. further digging tells me at least firmware v1.30 was released around 2003. I'm guessing at least regarding the halfspeed/2xspeed issues i'm seeing that my firmware has some bugs which may have been fixed in a later firmware?unfortunately, i cannot find any info relating to firmware revisions for the echo pro, or if its even possible to update over MIDI or if it needs a new eprom chip or something? anybody have any info like that?also, if anyone has advice re: midi setup for properly recreating the DL4 style functions i'd be most obliged. On Mon, Mar 30, 2015 at 2:57 AM, bill walker <wildbillwalker@icloud.com> wrote:well this is not a fix per say, but the TC Ditto x2 is essentially the same function ( without the delays and once only feature) as the DL-4, has both reverse and half speed and a much longer loop recording time, and and undo function.
