here here on the apple care comments from Per.. to date, I've saved over 4500 dollars and only paid 1000 of it for my apple care (on three computers which needed service)

also, once, I've had to do a whole performance running off of my cloned hard drive (superduper), and done it successfully.  that's my answer to the stability question...  with that done, you can run off of anyone's mac, as long as it is close to the power of your own... 

I'm not running at the numbers you are, chris, but when I was, I was using my laptop exclusively, and feeling stable.  I'm not sure if the extensive hardware reviews on this particular model are out yet, though.
