Did you try swapping out the midi cable?
Midi cables short out just like any other cable. Its rare but I have seen
it at the back of my own midi patch bay-- took me days to figure it out---
Of course, had I dug in my toolbox for the Midi Tester when I first
suspected a possible short, It would have taken minutes to figure out.
