that's a "classic" mistake on the RC-50:
When you are in SINGLE mode, you need to turn off TEMPO SYNC for each (!) 
of the three PHRASEs seperately.

It's quite common sense, but I also occasionally forget it. Since you 
don't a see a button, you think everything is fine, but you have to go all 
the way through the PHRASE settings to turn it off. It's actually too bad, 
cause you read it often in the reviews "rc-50 sounds incredibly crap.." 
etc where people must have stumbled into that exact problem
