Re: Re: ...what to go for then?

Going to the laptop aside, I'm surprised no one suggested picking up a
used
Boomerang. That was my first looper...served me well, with reverse, half
speed, A/B loops, nice big durable buttons that you can stomp on, a volume
that you can control with your foot. I thought it was a decent
machine...accept that it wasn't the quietest unit in town. If I were
looking into a fist looper, I might even wait for one of the new Boomerang
units. It just seems like the Boomerang is a great road-worthy box. I've
seen a lot of touring bands with them when them come into town.

Moreover, I'm with Jeff...if you already have a laptop, I'd go with that,
but it with the accessories you'll need to get the system connected and
working it may cost more than buying a Jamman or RC-20. Mobius if free. A
decent sound card will run $150-$300. A MIDI interface another $50-$100
(unless it is included with the audio interface, like the M-Audio firewire
unit), and then a MIDI foot controller for $100-$300. So, if you already
have a laptop, it could cost between $300 and $700 to get looping with
your
notebook, depending on the quality if soundcard/audio/MIDI interface and
MIDI controller. If you go other cheaper route, then it is close to a
wash
whether you just buy an inexpensive hardware looper, but you get just a
fraction of the features and functionality of Mobius...that is an
important
factor. If you go the expensive route, which you may end up going to
anyway,
then the simple hardware setup is the economical choice...but again, the
features, the feature, the features. Just look what you get with a program
like Mobius. For all practical purposes, it is doing everything that my
Looperlative and two EDPs did....both outstanding units, but doomed to
obscelesence in my world of technology.

good summary mark, i second the lexicon jamman, mainly because i am
selling mine, and i believe there are a few others selling theirs :)

for a first looper, i'd suggest an RC-20 or maybe rc-20XL, those are
nice, and for a lot of people who are kinda interested in looping but
not really, i suggest to them the boss DD20 or line 6 DL-4 mainly
because if they don't like it, they still have a decent delay pedal
(the lexicon jamman has a delay function too!)

otherwise, it seems like laptop looping might be the way to go for a lot :)
