astonishingly, it's taken me this long to join the list where I ought to have been for ages..... my band has two jam-mans, a repeater and was using tape-based loops before that, since about 1979. we have a large number of 1/4" machines and an old powertran delay/sampler that we used to use before the jam-man was available.
29:
much later we got a powertran mcs-1 (kit-sampler/delay from the early 80s), then a boss half-rack delay/shifter with a freeze input. now we have two jam-mans, two repeaters.... but most of the musical repetition is from analogue sequencers, up to seven patterns running simultaneously and changing/being edited in real-time. the lexicons and electrixes are referred to locally as "freeze boxes" and tend to be used for grabbing chunks of noise, with guitar phrases and keyboard phrases coming second and third on the list.

and meanwhile, on the EH 16s delay.... does anyone else out there remember the bel bd180? I didn't have one of those either, but our first solid-state looper was the powertran mcs-1 delay line/sampler, a 2U box with about 64k of memory... it could function as a crude monophonic sampler using midi or cv/gate, and could be hooked up to a bbc computer for sample dumps, but we used it chiefly as a long delay/looper (completely unsynced). it's 8 bit and has dbx chips at either end of the digital section in an attempt to improve the s/n ratio. also, there's an lfo that can be used to modulate the master clock and put wobbles on the delays/loops.

meanwhile, however, I have recorded just about everything into jamman, repeaters, boss 1/2 rack pitch shifter, powertran mcs-1 and cheetah sx16. this latter- a rather budgety stereo sampler from the late 80s- was across the whole mix for one session and was good for a one-off stereo freeze lasting about 20 seconds (i.e. no overdubs). we found we could refresh the freeze with one button push but had to fade it out first or it would shut off abruptly.

I can manage two repeaters, two jam-mans, a powertran mcs-1, several boss delays and (most importantly of all) 12 full size and 9 portable 1/4" decks. of course, there wouldn't be room for us on the same stage.....
30:
agreed. I think I could make my old powertran mcs1 do much the same thing, and it too has a click output that doesn't get recorded.... and the repeater makes a decent delay line if you turn the feedback (overdub level) down and use it with a mixer, so the fripp impressions- if that's how you get y'r kicks- are easy to do. and the sellon-ed jamman would be good at this too, being able to switch between echo and loop modes on the fly.

I just bought another powertran mcs-1, which box I have mentioned in a positive light in previous posts, for £120 (about $500 at current rates ;-) ) . as far as I can tell, the functionality is more-or-less the same.

there isn't a perfect looping tool because we all want them to do different things. I also use jam-man, dl4, repeater, powertran mcs-1 (2 of each).... the dod does it's own thing, quite badly, but that's partly why it's such fun.

200605/msg00473:RE: MIDI sync survey: is it important to you?
43:
back in 1994, we started to record a piece that revolved around a repeated guitar phrase. the phrase meshed quite nicely with some sequenced synth lines, but since we weren't multi-tracking anything then (purist ethic/particular school-of-improv), the guitarist couldn't let loose with a corresponding lead line or solo. so I set up a delay on our powertran mcs-1 that matched the length of this phrase & gave him a footswitch to "unfreeze" this delay. as the frozen delay drifted out of sync with the sequencers, he would hit the footswitch & re-enter the phrase. this not only got the parts back in sync but, since he had to do this every thirty seconds or so, it prevented him noodling for the entire piece.

24:
my varispeed looper devices are the powertran MCS-1 sampler/delay & the venerable bel-BD80. two of the first & one of the latter. 32:
(they both have voltage control inputs so that one could control the "pitch" of the frozen audio using a standard cv/gate synth. this raises the odd spectacle of a monophonic "sampler" being played from a monophonic synth; the powertran also has a rudimentary midi spec for this purpose.) 36:
I don't know about the BD80 (developed by mick barnard, who was briefly in genesis a long time ago) but the powertran is 8-bit & uses dbx companding. this makes it sound more like tape, ironically.
