I agree, the x/y controller is great.  One of the
reasons I went with the Novation Remote 61 for a midi
controller.  Also it has a "z" control too if you
consider aftertouch.  

I wish it had an Alesis style "air" control though. 
Man that's fun.  I might even buy their midi
controller just for that.
