SOUTHERN OREGON LOOPING GIG ANNOUNCEMENT
Hey all,
There is almost no chance that any of you will be able to (or likely
even want to) make it to this gig.
But it makes me feel better to post the announcement anyway (since it's
my first gig of the new year and one of several already scheduled).
Nathan Hubbard is traveling up the West Coast performing along the way
and when he wrote to request we do a gig together I jumped at the
chance.
Here's our little press release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Announcing:
Pioneers at the Hall
A Concert of "New Music"
by Southern California Musician/Composer Nathan Hubbard
and Southern Oregon Guitarist/Improvisor Ted Killian
March 28th, 2008 • 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
At Pioneer Hall, 73 Winburn Way, Ashland, OR 97520
Two Solo Sets and a Collaborative Duo Set Are Planned
Admission $5.00
When was the last time you listened to anything particularly new,
surprising or different, musically speaking - probably a long time ago
in a very dry college music appreciation course, right? While there is
certainly nothing wrong with pursuing and enjoying divertive listening
experiences that are familiar, comforting and fashionable - there is
much to be said for occasionally broadening your aural horizons (and
palate) to include something a little less "normal."
Imagine for a moment what music might sound like if it were
aesthetically organized and created from a radically different
perspective, a different set of motivations and considerations -
perhaps even from another dimension, another planet, another
intelligent species entirely. What would this music sound like? While
nothing so exotic is specifically planned or promised for their
program, that concept would be a handy one to keep in mind if you come
out to hear percussionist Nathan Hubbard and guitarist Ted Killian
when they perform on the last Friday of March at Pioneer Hall.
Nathan Hubbard:
Percussionist Nathan Hubbard's solo music is an amalgam of his work as
an improviser, composer and instrument builder. Using acoustic and
amplified instruments and a wide range of electronics, Hubbard creates
a soundworld of multiple layers, where the music changes definitions of
form, shape and outcome. This music has been presented in a wide
variety of contexts, from concert halls and festivals to freeway
underpasses and desolate mountain roads, and has been documented on the
recordings Born On Tuesday (2004, Circumvention Music) and Blind Orchid
(2007, Accretions Records).
Beyond his solo work, Hubbard collaborates with guitarist Noah
Phillips, fellow percussionist Curtis Glatter, the ARC Trio and the
quartet Cosmologic, as well as leading his own Nathan Hubbard Trio,
Nathan Hubbard/Everything After chamber quintet, Nathan Hubbard Octet,
and the large ensemble Nathan Hubbard Skeleton Key Orchestra. Hubbard
is also a member of the Trummerflora Collective.
Ted Killian:
For over four decades Ted Killian has explored his own personal vision
and approach to guitar playing and music-making. There is almost no
telling what will happen when he shows up to play. Not only are his
electric guitar performances freely improvisational in nature (though
he is sometimes known to quote recognizable snippets as disparate as
Jean Sibelius, Herb Alpert, Jimi Hendrix, Isaac Watts, Phillip Glass or
Krysztov Penderecki) he has also been known to employ such non-standard
performance techniques as sawing on his guitar with a hack-saw, playing
it with compressed air, kitchen utensils, springs, violin bows (or
E-bow) in addition to his ever-present banjo picks and brass slide. He
also employs an enormous amount of digital sound-processing and has
been a pioneer of live "looping" technology for over 25 years.
Primarily a solo act, he has nonetheless added his unique musical
"stamp" to various ensemble works alongside a multitude of West Coast
"new music" luminaries - foremost, (over the years), as a frequent
musical foil for SoCal avant-jazz trumpeter Jeff Kaiser. Ted's own
music playfully spans the distance from tender plaintive whisper to the
passionate, volcanic, outpouring. His solo CD Flux Aeterna (2001,
pfMENTUM) achieved a surprising amount of worldwide radio airplay and
international critical acclaim for a recording by a musician that is
resolutely out of the mainstream and flying below the radar. A live
concert duet CD, Mojo at the Dojo (2008, BEMF/Kunaki) with fellow
polyglot guitarist Krispen Hartung, was just released earlier this
year. Ted has been performing actively throughout the Western States
for the past 20 years and makes his home in Medford, Oregon.
