I use a Vortex and a Boss RSP-550.  The Vortex is great for freaky
effects and the Roland has some nice 'verbs and delays.  The 550 can
be MIDI controlled too, but I haven't gotten that far into it.

I played around with a Behringer Virtualizer which has some ok effects
for around $100.

The Boss VF1 is rather popular among people who like to warp and twist
their sound.
