Re: AW: The Big(ish) Idea

for reasons exactly like u described. new ideas could be implemented easily. imagine the involvement of going switch 1 latching if it were all manual hard wired switches. let the chip do the work for u. and they're literally CENTS in the way of cost.
i like ur idea though. it could simply be a latching polarity switch. problem is that u still have to hit that switch, effectively silencing ur gtr, BEFORE u start stuttering. something to be avoided.
it should be:
• im playing--- my gtr signal is going from input to output nicely.
• i depress switch 2-"STUTTER" (momentary) ---no change. i still hear my guitar
• i release----silence
• i press---sound
• i release---no sound
• i hit the switch 1"BYPASS" (latching)----playing goes back to normal

since im accustomed to depressing a footswitch to hear sound anyway, its much more natural to hit switch one instead of 2 get back sound normally.
the other way is awkward. i hit switch 1 to silence THEN start stuttering with switch 2.

if however u have a 3rd switch "POLARITY"(latching), then is u have it the other way around, then u could leave the unit on and simply start "negative" stuttering by playing with switch 2.
thats interesting.

one small design issue---hitting the polarity switch should toggle the bypass switch automatically thereby forcing the signal to go through the stutter switch. bypass mode ignores the stutter switch.

1 more logic chip could do all that.

I have been doing this kind of thing using a multi-FX (think FireworX) plus a footswitch (also, the Roland V-xxxx series works if you connect a volume control in the signal chain to e.g. your CTRL pedal).

Adrian, why going active? Is there any reason to this?

Phil, another suggestion: Switch two could be the momentary foot switch that you describe. Switch one could operate Switch two's polarity switch and change it from normally off to normally on. (Of course switch two would be latching). So you could use the pedal to let signal pass when you press switch two ("gate mode") or to interrupt the signal when you press switch two ("slice mode"). If you put the device in slice mode and leave switch two alone, the thing is basically off.

nice idea! it would be fun to loop that.
i can build it for u. just let me know how big u want the box. how u want the buttons aligned and what type/size of buttons u want to use. i assume u want the standard... in on the right out on the left?

now im not trying to put u down in anyway. u have a great creative mind. hats off to u for pursuing this. its a good idea but im afraid, not all that unique and involved to be awarded a patent. and it could be done in a million and one ways too, so anyone could run around ur patent anyway. see what im saying?
meanwhile, back on the ranch. what do u envision paying for this to be built? the parts wont be that expensive at all and my labor cost would reasonable. we could always figure something out.

the most expensive thing would be the box itself. i would do it with active electronics. ie with logic and analog chips that need power. simple 9V adaptor that could chain to ur existing pedals. also ill have true bypass to eliminate any clicking on and off.
i already have the schematic in my head and the parts i need. i already have the components i need in my lab too. lucky u!
i would just need to order the box and the switches of ur choice. radio shack most likely has the casing u need but i know they dont have any heavy duty foot switches. i need the double pole type to keep it true bypass and momentary for the 2nd switch. it should not click like the 1st on/off switch. just be spring loaded push on/release off. soft feel.

if all this sounds like gibberish, im sorry. i get carried away.
but not to worry. once we have all the parts we need, it would only take a week (i have a busy schedule)and u could have it in ur hands a few days after that. u would be responsible for painting and printing any logo u want though:-)

text back privately.

Hi All

Ok, so I have been hinting at building a pedal for a while now, for reasons that I won't go into, my Ego kind of wanted to keep the design some sort of secret, however this has led to nowhere for me so it is time to REVEAL ALL!!!

Basically I want to make a foot operated device that allows a signal to pass only when the button is pressed. Kind of a Poor-Mans-Morse-Glitch Pedal.

I envisaged building it as follows.

two buttons button one simply being on / off
In off position the signal is bypassed directly to the output jack
in the On position it passes to the next momentary button.

Button Two is the activation button,

it is a push to make type switch so initially the signal is dead, however, when the button is pressed the sound is allowed to pass to the output.

I can therefore strum a chord while it is off then tap the button rythmically to let small stabs of sound through.

I came up with this when playing through a broken amp that you had to hold the jack in place in the input, i found that tapping the jack let me do dda-da-da type noises.

anyways basically I know NOTHING about how to do this, I did what seemed reasonable to me but all I got was nasty hiss and buzzing. I would appreciate ANY help or comments on how I may impliment this pedal.

I had once dreamed about making money off this idea, however, it will never be built if I cant get some advice!

By the way I intend to LOOP with it so its not totally OT!!

Thanks Y'all
