This Tuesday September 20th - PiNG AMBiENCE 3 - LiVE

In celebration of THE AMBiENT PiNG's new CD release "PiNG AMBiENCE 3
~ STRiNG THiNGS" this show will feature three ambient guitar artists:
Paul Royes (The Cybertarist), Phil Ogison (The Devil in The Design)
and Joe G (Styrohead) in live performance.

Paul Royes will compose and perform his latest intuitive music work
titled "Sustain & Feedback", plus some favourites from "Mayan Plateau",
"Delta Forces" and "Dolphin Sky". "The role of the arts is to explore
the inner space of man; to find out how much and how intensely he can
vibrate, through sound, through what he hears, whichever it is. They
are a means by which to expand his inner universe."
(Karlheinz Stockhausen On Music)

Phil Ogison will be composing on the fly, as part of the "Vessel"
series. This is a joint project with Menno Krant, painter. Each
"Vessel" will only be heard once in its' actual performance mode,
the only record of the performance being the recording medium. This
is in keeping with the nature of painting, there being only one copy
of a given painting, one original. This puts the music into a 'Fine Art'
category. Subsequent recordings, of which only one per performance
will be available, will be paired with a unique painting by Menno.

Joe G will be using urban/environmental earth sounds with electric &
acoustic guitars, loopers, delays, cutting audio gates, modulation
sound processors and a touch of slow space percussion to weave his
improvisational magic.

General Chaos Visuals will provide their always beautiful eye candy.

The new PiNG AMBiENCE 3 ~ STRiNG THiNGS compilation CD of spacious
ambient guitar sound sculptures will be available at ping things
the night of the show and at http://www.pingthings.com

Featuring performances by Syntax Error and Vancouver's Wendy Atkinson
with David Leary, THE AMBiENT PiNG was the place to be for two
innovative shows on Tuesday, September 13.

Syntax Error (Joshua Hemming & Tony Ferreira) covered a lot of musical
territory in the first set: beginning with ambient instrumentals and
building in rhythmic intensity as the set progressed, the duo sampled
ethereal vocals from two artists they regularly work with, Astra
(sung vocals) and Mandy-Tori (spoken word). After the concert, Joshua
explained that, for Syntax Error, "vocals are particularly appealing
because they bring a certain beauty and humanity to our sound and can
provide a pleasing contrast against the cold synths and dark scapes."
Joshua also pointed out that sounds and images from the world around
him--like rain or traffic or the screeching sounds of the subway-
significantly influence his process of soundscape design.

Wendy Atkinson opened the second set with several solo bass guitar
pieces. David Lester of Vancouver band Mecca Normal then joined her
onstage with a dramatic start to his guitar stylings and the duo
entertained the audience with dueling guitars and playful stage
antics. They closed the evening with two songs from a project with
east Vancouver poet Bud Osborne, songs they manipulated for use
outside of the project. The resulting soundscapes reflected a
strong sense of their roots in the harsh reality of east Vancouver.

Look for the launch of i POP PiNG at Word on the Street this Sunday!

"It's You Who Made My Head Spin" by Weird State Inbetween

Weird State Inbetween is a collaborative project between
Anne Sulikowski of Building Castles Out of Matchsticks and Scott
Johnson of the Lonely Flight. "It's You Who Made My Head Spin" is a
recording by the duo (with guest D.P. of Offensive Orange) taken
from a live performance at the AMBiENT PiNG in March of this year.

The disc explores a dark and claustrophobic environment filled with
metallic scrapes, sampled voices, piercing tones and deep pads. It's
a kaleidoscope of sounds coming from all directions, sometimes with
a rhythm or melody, sometimes with nothing distinct that you can
identify or trace. It can be unsettling at times, anxious at others,
sometimes frightening even. Alternatively it can be soothing, calming,
almost loving in it's embrace, but only briefly, only long enough to
remind you that you're not alone. Vocal loops, melodic touchstones,
they all combine to ease the transition from the real world into
this wierd state in between. And as you listen it becomes abundantly
clear that everything around you is very very very beautiful. You
just have to know what to look for...

Anne and Scott (and guest D.P.) played a wonderful set that evening,
and we're lucky to have this reminder of how wonderful they can be
together. These wierd states expand between and beyond, and we're
better off for it.

Wierd State Inbetween are among many artists who have generously
offered to donate all earnings from the sale of their CDs through
ping things for the month of September to the American Red Cross
(less taxes and shipping costs) in an effort to raise money for
Hurricane relief efforts. Please visit http://www.pingthings.com
