I'm doing the same thing and found what's supposed to be a very decent
controller for $113 on ebay.  It's the Digital Music Corp controller (see
link below for a fellow looper's usage).  Actually, I don't even have it
yet, the seller just shipped it yesterday.  I hope it lives up to my
expectations (basically hands free operation WITH alpha-based names!!! 
Every
time I pay over $100 for an effect with patches like A34, or 4-1-2, I could
shoot someone.  I've no idea why more companies don't use a simple 10 - 20
character display and increase the cost -- it can't be *that* much, can 
it?)
