Hi, first time poster here,I just recently purchased the RC-20XL to play ambient soundscapes (delays and filters - this is my first foray into looping) and my only question is...I can save a loop on Phrase 1, and keep overdubbing... But how do you get the phrase to 'move along'? Is it possible to play phrase 1, keep it playing, and be recording into the phrase 2 setting so you can improvise a bit more with it and get a bit more natural progression of sounds? Or do you have to have pre-recorded loops and mash them together, like sequencing? Do the phrases HAVE to be recorded earlier or is there a way to record them on the fly?I like how you can overdub until there's no tommorrow, but with just 1 phrase to build on, how can you make the music take on a different idea? I guess that's my main beef. If it can't do what I'm

Enormous amount of sample time--330 seconds! Over ten times that of afully upgraded Jamman, almost twice the maxed out Echoplex!5. Intuitive built-in interface--one pedal for record/play/overdub, one forstop.6. Footprint--very compact.7. Price--it's in the Line 6 DL4's price range, cheaper than a Boomerang.8. Anyway, would be really grateful if anyone could answer a question I have... I have a boss rc20xl which I was planning to use for the guitar but ending up using for vocal loops... I was thinking of getting the latest akai headrush to use for the guitar but my dilemma is this... Is there a better live, foot-operated vocal looper than using a boss rc20xl? If so, I'd rather relegate the boss to the guitar department and get a more suitable vocal looper...

I joined the list to get information, advice, tips, etc., on looping. But it seems that units such as the RC20XL, JamMan and such, are considered "toys" by the majority of users on this site. It seems like, if you don't own an Echoplex or Repeater - you're not really looping and you're just not welcome here. I understand the origins of Loopers Delight, so I see where the "brand loyalty" rules.

Mike,I think by comparing people talking about EDP or Repeater vs. DigitechJamman or Boss RC20XL to knocking down people who don't have a Taylor orMartin, you are missing the point somewhat. The way I understood most of the messages dealing with the DigitechJamman or Boss RC20XL, these messages said that both devices seem to betargeted at a somewhat different set of use cases than the ones employedby the majority of artists here on this list. This has nothing to dowith knocking down anyone because he hasn't a Martin instead of hisTakamine, rather because he has a Martin instead of a Klein and wants touse it to play death metal. Worse still, the Digitech Jamman is named after a famous vintage looper, yet doesn't do the same things the original (Lexicon) Jamman did. When I first got onto this list, I looped using the delay

I believe it will help sell more LP1's but I purchased mine (next batch) not only to get in on the ground floor of the development and to help a budding new developer but also for exactly what this box is currently doing. I have two EDP's which I love and will not part with. I also have a Repeater, an EH16 reissue, a RC-20, a RC-20xl, a new Jamman, 2 DD-20's, an old TEAC Reel, old cassettes that I used in the 80's along with an old Boss Rackmount Delay which I could set for near infinite delay. I started looping before I ever heard the term and became enamoured with the sounds. I now feel that looping for me is an extension of instrument and self and I find it hard to play without it when working on small pieces. It helps me develop faster and smarter so to get back to the MIDI sync issue yes it is important but it is a bonus as this box is it's own instrument like the others and it's personality will grow over time just like the EDP or any other of these loopers I listed as it is still the individual who gives live and use to the tool. Where's my tea! thanks for listening.

i don't think this would be a good one for a beginer at all. besides the glitch, it would be pretty compicated if you've never tried the process at all. i'm sure there would be plenty of opinions on that from this group......a good beginer's looping foot pedal. i guess i'd maybe recomend the rc-20xl or the newer jamman?

Another thing about the rc20xl. It only has 2 footswitches so it is very basic and easy to use. It has several smaller buttons for programming your settings and such but once you have done that, you only need one foot and don't really have to even look at it since there are only 2 footswitches.
18:
Hi Martin, What you want to do seems quite basic. I'm sure that a rc50 would work great for you but I think the rc20xl would work just as well for you and is cheaper. I have had one before and it had 16 minutes of loop time with unlimited overdubs. It also saves your work when you turn it off and sounds pretty good IMO.
18:
Don't forget, though, that the Jamman and RC20XL are both mono devices, so if stereo is an issue, these may not be suitable, martin daws <thepoetmd@hotmail.com> wrote: thanks for getting back to me.its appreciatedmd>From: x031661-loopers@yahoo.com>Reply-To: Loopers-Delight@loopers-delight.com>To: Loopers-Delight@loopers-delight.com>Subject: Re: what looping tool? again>Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2007 10:51:44 -0800 (PST)>>I'd sat the RC-50 is overkill for what you describe.>I've used the digitech jamman and I think it would work well for what you >want to do.>>>----- Original Message ---->From: martin daws >To: Loopers-Delight@loopers-delight.com>Sent: Friday, March 2, 2007 5:37:06 AM>Subject: what

As a bassist looping aint really on the top priority list of things when you are out there gigging, but I have lately gotten into solo bass and there you have it – the bug’s got me. I guess the Looperlative will end up on some wishlist soon! But I aint nowhere there yet. For about the last month I have been totally nuts over my RC20XL. I also have the GT 6B, but find it very limited in terms of looping capabilities.

Hi Sylvian,Sounds good, your tracks! Allso checked Thelooproom; very nice. I've added you.i dont know if i'm going to use the possibility of recording back into the first looper, but it would be nice to be able to.The AB-switching wont be the problem i think, because in my proposed setup both loopers' signals will allways run to the amp.The biggest problem will be though to switch one off and the otherone on at the same time. (need 2 feet for that)Narrowing down is good! But i'm still in the exploriation fase. Have to find out whats possible first. This is my first oneman-thing (have been in multi-person-bands only)And offcourse i want to keep it intuitive and easy. That's why i was curious how you guys work with the possibilities and where the freedom and intuitive playfullness ends for you guys.Maybe i should start a thread on "This is my signalpath." (including ab-switches and volumepedals) But maybe you guys allready did that ages ago.cheers, nathanOp 29-mei-2007, om 20:26 heeft Stephen Scott het volgende geschreven:Hi Nathan, barge away, This techique of creating a short loop, then manually multiplying by re-recording into a longer loop is perfectly valid, and one that many loopers use, myself included. Your idea of being able to feed the new loop back into the first looper to create another longer (or shorter) loop is commendable. This will work fine, you won't lose too much audio quality, but getting the timing spot-on is going to be a major headache, especially live. Also the mechanics of physically switching the correct A-B box etc. at the right time will also prove to be a bit of a nightmare in a live situation, beware ! I used to have a very complex switching system that allowed me to send a loop from one device into the input of any other device (including the front end of my guitar preamp/multiFX), which gave me lots of versatility, but slowed up the music making process too much to be of any use live. I have simplified my rig somewhat, but aim to simplify further so that I can concentrate more on making music and expanding ideas, rather than pushing buttons and giving less room for technological errors (live anyway). Hava look at the pics of my set up on myspace, and listen to some tracks while you're there. http://www.myspace.com/sylvianfisher Hi everybody,Sorry to barge into the "discussion" . I'm new here but have been recieving the mail for a while now.I'm Nathan from Amsterdam/The Netherlands and i have a one-manproject with a electronic/acoustic drumkit and this instrument i made which is like a little table with amplified basestrings on it.I have i question for you guys, maybe you can help me.I use a Boss RC20xl in which i feed the electronic part of my drumkit plus the stringthing, but want to be able to run more loops. So i am thinking of buying an rc2 to join in on the fun. I use an A/B box to do that. My gtr into the A/B, one side goes to the looper, one side goes right to the amp.then I can decide if I am including the gtr in the loop. You could also program the RC-50 to mute the inputs, depending on what you want to do, but I think that's not as flexible as an A/B box.TeddyOn Jun 18, 2007, at 8:12 AM, Stuart Masters wrote:Thanks, guys, that's really useful. Well, I appreciate the commenst and I dont mind if you send some players my way, absolutley. I mainly bought the looper to play blues becasue my guitar style is more lead playing which was hard to do as a solo acoustic as Im just not that good at fingerstyle blues. You ask about my methods, so Ill try to explain it for you and your friends. Basically I have a behrigner mixer, vox amp, ibanez electric, ovation acoustic and my boss rc-20 xl loop station. With the rc-20xl it has a guide and I just use the steady kick that it has just a different speeds. So i pick a song I wanna do,kinda hum it in my head then tap out the rythmn speed on my pedal, so now i have a steady kick going. Now if its a standard I !V V blues, I start recording the whole phrase all the measures. Now that I have a kick and now my main chord structure going, I solo a little over it till it gets to where the measure starts again. Now i switch my DOD eefects pedal to a preset that Ive pitch detuned down

I will check out the chili dog pedal. I went ahead today and bought the RC-20XL loop station, of which I see you have two. Your sound bytes are beautiful. Nice job! I'm just doing a Chicago blues thing but with no drum machine, I plan to use a snare/kick and hi-hat mic'd through a board and through the looper as a track. You've got a nice setup! Thanks again.

Thanks for the kind words. I use an Ibanez SA series guitar and a boss rc-20xl loop pedal. So far my drums are just the steady kick drum from the guide until I can afford to upgrade to rc-50. I use the bass effect i created on my effects processor, and I switch between clean, dirty and bass while i create the loop.David Small <dsmall@uh.edu> wrote: Ray: Great stuff. Hi Matt,The Boss RC20XL or RC2 should do all you need to do, although it does lack some of the sound tweaking features of the DL4. Boss pedals seem pretty robust to me and should last well (I'm sure my RC20XL will outlast me). can't help you with the mics, but for what you are talking about, the RC-50 is just too much everything(price and capability). As a guitarist, I play with an RC-20XL and thats more than enough for what you are talking about.

Stephen;Aside from the issue of not being able to see the LED's in the sunlight, beware that you may experience a shutdown due to heat build up in the pedals. I had both my DD20 and RC20xl shut down when playing in the sun even though it was a cool day. You can tell it's about to happen when the LED on the DD20 starts going all black. Both pedals recovered when cooled down and work fine (though I've since moved to using an RC50 for looping and haven't put the DD20 and 20xl through any hard testing to see if the heat caused any long lasting damage - ie: are they more susceptible to heat now????).- Paul <<http://web.mac.com/pmimlitsch/ >>On Sep 30, 2007, at 2:25 PM, Stephen Scott wrote:Here's a thing. Yes, this is a problem with many loopers, there will always tend to be some sort of click/glitch at the stop/start point.I have worked out a way to avoid this using the RC20XL. In the sample memories, I have saved loops of silence of various lengths (eg, 4secs, 8secs, 16secs, 32secs, etc). If I want a glitch free loop, I will set the silent loop running, then use the record pedal to punch in when I want to record. This way, you can over-run the start/stop point, or stop before, or exactly on it, and there will be no glitch. The functionality of the RC20XL is similar, in that you can still remove the last layer. When you erase the whole loop, it still keeps the preset silence length, which is handy. The problems with this are obvious. 1. You can only use this technique with pre-determined loop lengths, not the most flexible system, 2. When a loop is stopped and re-started, the loop may not start exactly where you want it to (this

I don't know about the other loopers mentioned, but there is actually a way around this using the RC20XL. You need to pre-record silences of fixed lengths into the phrase stores. Then, you can start the silent loop running and 'punch in' loops. The loop will be overwritten without any clicks etc. Reverb and echo effects will overlap the loop point naturally etc. Erasing the loops recorded does NOT erase the silent loops, so they can be re-used.Of course, this method does require you to work with pre-fixed length loops, which I can understand would not suit most people. I started out with a boomerang+. This works well for changing verse-chorus on the fly. I then picked up an RC-20XL, but that was somewhat limited in loop switching, although it did have other benefits such as Undo. However, I used the two in a setup in which I would do rhythm tracks on the RC-20 and song structure on the boomerang (or vice versa). This works for some songs but not for others. The big problem with this setup is no undo function on the boomerang, so if you make a mistake you have to make it work within the song or abort. Also the timing is extremely tricky so if your rhythm is off just a tiny bit that will get magnified each time through the loop.

I'm using Ableton Live as the master. The problem is "warbly" pitch problems. I didn't notice it at first after the firmware update and thought it was fixed. But then I realised I was testing it with my bass through many effects pedals that didn't show up the problem. I tried clean bass and it was very obvious. At this point I don't use it live yet because of this problem. I'm still using the tap tempo on my rc20xl to "sync" untill I can find a solution. Ah... Yes that would be right..But I guess you can't stop a loop and start it again while in a delay mode?I was very tempted by the dd20 regardless, nice pedal ... Basically what I'm after is the level of functionality of, say, an RC20xl (with stop start capabilities, undo, and maybe quantize) but with the ability to select the bpm. I'm looking into software loopers as well but I am still too scared of that much live audio processing on the fly!Alicia. Any of the delay modes on the DD20 can be used as a looper when youadjust the feedback. All you have to do (with the delay select OFF)is set the feedback to 100%, set your tempo, press the delay on whenyou're ready to record into it and then press the delay off whenyou're done. Press on again if you want to add more. The delay onthe DD20 continues to play when its 'off' making the off button moreof an open delay/close delay option. whether this would be considered "mutli-channel" i don't know. i never did use the mic option, i just used it for guitar. but i think the idea for it is solo performer (or band) could record guitar/voice things (or anything w/ microphone) and then layer on top, etc. so if you just needed it to supplement live stuff, guitar/voice (or keyboards) it would probably work. and it does reverse nice and easy. the original one like i had (the 4 min recording time) you can get pretty cheap and try it out. i think i got mine a yr ago for 150$, so they're in that range or cheaper now.... obviously if you need lots of recording time, the rc20xl is newer, & last i checked them, they were still going a bit higher-they were out of my price range when i was looking....

I've been tinkering with reason and fruityloops but my main loop platform is the digitech jamman. I also sometimes use a boss rc20xl to record onto the jamman. Beyond that, I loop by participating in circuitous events and patterns of behavior. (Hopefully not shorting myself!)

Honestly I do find it strange that auto overdub is absent on the Rang. There's even auto overdub on my Strymon Timeline and looping on that is mostly an afterthought.I've gone through a lot of loopers over the last 10 years. (dl4, jm4, rc-20xl, rc-50, dd-7, timeline, lp-1) but now use Rang III + SideCar as my main looper. (Timeline and DD7 as secondary loopers)

It looks unused and works perfectly. I'll find out what the owner wants for it if anyone is interested. Contact me off list please. Bill

Something I just noticed about my Boss LoopStation RC-20XL is if I want to turn every knob setting to, "low," or, "off," not all of the knobs have the low to hi going from left to right. What I mean is one knob may be at 0 by turning it left and another at 0 by turning it right.
