OT: websites'n'stuff

Looking for general opinions and experiences on websites & promotion...

I have a group that accompanies silent films with improvised soundtracks.  We've been playing in our home town for about 5 years and pulling in decent crowds (100+) and looking to expand our territory.  We're not looking at turning pro; given everybody's schedules/job/family, I think we'd top out at around one gig/month.

I think we need to get a website together and wondering if anybody share experiences on getting a "www.bandname.com" website or going for a freebie like tumblr, wordpress, blogspot, etc. website?

I don't want to look like we're uber-serious but also don't want a piece of crap.  Can I assume correctly that that distinction will mostly come down to content and presentation and not being judged by the url?

I have relations that can help with the initial cobbling together of a website and then I'd maintain/update so most platforms are available. I also have a relation with a server and can put our website there if I get a domain name.

We're on facebook and clips will be going up on youtube/vimeo over the summer...

the other ted.

Or would you sing somethin' different. Somethin' real. Somethin' *you* felt. Cause I'm telling you right now, that's the kind of song people want to hear. That's the kind of song that truly saves people. It ain't got nothin to do with believin' in God, Mr. Cash. It has to do with believin' in yourself. Sam Phillips, "Walk the Line"
