Generally refers to 4 knobs marked
Attack Decay Sustain Release.

The ADSR has no sound of it's own, but has the ability to control
other sounds.

An example
If the ADSR is controlling the volume of a note you play on a synthesizer.

1)You hold down a key, and the volume increases at the rate determined by
*Attack*.
2)When the volume reaches a maximum, it straight away starts to reduce at
a rate governed by *Decay*.
3)After it's decayed to a point determined by *Sustain* it remains
constant until..
4)When you take your finger off the key the sound fades at a rate
determined by *Release*.

An ADSR can be used to control other things apart from volume, typically
filter frequency.
