home recording/macbook/fan noise/external monitors

I have been having a dilemma in trying to find a way to record
acoustic guitar with/without voice and was curious if anyone had any
ideas. Long story short-

Present set up is:
2007 Macbook,
Mbox 2,
one external monitor screen

Using macbook to run either Logic or Pro Tools and saving files to
external drive.

When recording with open mics, fan comes on in macbook to the point
that it makes recording either solo guitar pieces or even guitar/voice
recording rather pointless. In these cases nothing else would be
added to the recording, so nowhere to hide.

I've come to the conclusion that I simply need to put macbook in
closet next to recording space. I know this will work sonically, but
I'd still like two monitor screens, and one needs to mirror the
macbook screen or at least have the menu bar. I did find this
product- http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/ and
I'm curious if anyone has any experience with such a device. The tech
support seemed to think it would work for what I'm trying to do.

The other question is .... Is there something I'm missing here?

Finally, given what I'm trying to accomplish - recording quiet music
with access to two monitor screens - what are some other setups people
are using? I've heard the new iMacs are amazingly silent, but the
idea of having something with a fan that could come on makes me
nervous. I'd rather make what I have work.

By the way, looping would come into play once I get all of this to work.

Any input is appreciated,

John
