What an excellent (non-OT) discussion! :)

I believe a lot of it boils down to the concept of "ambient" vs. "song" 
structure: What do you want to express? a specific idea or experimental 
explorations?

Personally, I like looping performances at least a bit structured (unless 
you can pull off a "Köln Concert"...), much like i.e. jazz improvisations 
based on a song structure.
