I like the EBS microbass II a lot for bass purposes--I also suggest the tech 21 sansamp RPM, which is a great preamp for just about any instrument, so even if bass isn't your main instrument, you could still use it on lots of other instruments as well.
I also would suggest checking out channel strips--I know a lot of bass players who will use channel strips like the ART pro channel for live and studio purposes.

hi,
 
i have just recorded 2 new albums with the american accordionist michael ward bergeman in london. for one of these albums i need to add some electric bass parts. at the moment, i do not have a bass preamp. do not have much info about rack bass preamps. what would you suggest for me to buy? a unit like bass pod or a tube preamp?
