Hi Mark,

Here's the quick answer:-

In order to use an Insert as if it was a direct out you need a special 
cable.
One end is a normal jack, the + of which is connected to both tip and ring
of a stereo jack at the other end. (Shield connection as usual).

Then plug the "stereo" jack into the Insert socket.

Soldering.
Easiest way is to start with a regular mono cable and replace one jack 
with stereo,
bridging the tip & ring as you suggest.
