nice summary, andy. i'd also like to point out that in my experience, actual artifacts are minimal if you're just change the playback speed on a loop to pitch-shift it (except during the actual process of changing when the buffers are overlapping) - it's like changing the speed on a turntable. (as opposed to pitch-shifting and time-stretching to preserve loop length). The pitch changes, the formants move along with them, and you get chipmunky or low rumbling sounds (that often expose interesting graininess), but i think those are psychoacoustic effects rather than distortion. correct me if i'm wrong.
