Fire Upon the Deep and all those are execellent! I loved them...in the same range for as Neverness by David Zindell. Profound piece of science fiction literature.

if you like vonnegut, why not try some greg bear. i read Eon when i was about 18 years old and it blew my mind. i can also recommend The Forge of God as a good starting point for his stuff
