Here in Sweden I have taken on another concept, since the first live
looping tour 2003. I have been reluctant to putting on an amateur
event, since I did not estimate that to resonate well with the Swedish
"media climate". I also personally did not like taking advantage of
musicians in the way you actually do when hiring them to perform
without getting paid. Instead I have invited musicians (on this list
and elsewhere) to join a longer "open-stage live-looping" tour that is
focused around concerts and workshops that event producers buy, i.e. a
pro concept. By setting this pro level I also qualified for some
culture/art funding, a source that is normally closed for amateur
activities. This approach also meant I did not receive many attenders
(the first year only Matthias Grob and Rick Walker joined in) but on
the other hand I gained credibility when pitching the tour to media.
We still lost money, though. Guess I'm just not "pro" enough ;-)

However, there are always other ways. I might look into finding a
partner here to put on a one or two days festival with loads of
performers that won't get paid. But I wouldn't want to market it like
a pro event, since that may look lame. I'd rather market it PROUDLY as
a true amateur gathering and manifestation!!!

("the pros of amateurism" is a long and interesting discussion that
deserves a thread in its own right)

But as for practical arrangements I need to work with professionals to
handle the venue, the sound system and everything that comes with
that. So that's the next stage here is finding a partner for the
muckwork.

Ok, friends - since we took over Berlin last week lets take over Europe
next ;-)
