An active monitor is the same as a powered (loud)speaker, so with (a) 
built-in amplifier(s). They need a line signal as input, usually 1/4" jack 
or XLR and  115/230V power; passive systems need a signal from an amp and 
that differs technically from line signals and often use different 
connectors (speakon). If you play mono, you only need 1 active monitor, 
for stereo you need 2.
