I didn't get a direct answer from this forum, but I did get a clue that seems to have worked. I checked the Console to see if any files were repeatedly producing errors - and in fact there was one in Library/QuickTime. I moved it to the Desktop, rebooted, and it's been working well since. I haven't had to run QT, though.
