not so far fetched at all.... I remember a digigram unit in the early
90s that was designed to do exactly this- no idea how successful it was
BUT
my roland GI-10, a not especially top-of-the-range (these days) GK-1
pickup>midi converter also has a mono input on the front, ostensibly for
non-GK-equipped instruments. I'm sure there's a picture in the manual of
someone playing a sax or something into this input.

you'd have to be careful not to sing any chords, though, or the tracking
will go off....... :-)
