I think that applause from "doing something difficult" comes mostly from
musicians or aficionados, or judges. I'd say that the average listener 
would
not rate 'degree of difficulty' as high as other factors , such as
emotional or other connection with the music/artist - no matter how simple
or difficult it is "perceived" to be.     Of course there are many other
factors to be considered.
