if the tape goes slack, swap the machines

(usually the capstan motors are locked to the mains frequency)

fast fingerwork,
start rec machine first, so playback machine can take up the slack.

On "God Save the Queen" Fripp used one channel as the long delay,
then sent it to the other channel which had the Rec>>Playback type 
echo added.
