Try some Jack Vance. He is inimitable. Very easy to read and very easy to get into from the get-go. Also, great subtle humor.

The Eyes of the Overworld.

Tales of the Dying Earth (a compilation of four books inluding the aforementioned).

The Demon Princes (Four separate books that can be found in collections of them all)

I sometimes think he is actually an alien as his worlds/destinations/etc. are so lucid as its hard to believe he's never been to these places.
