playing samples

Hi,
I have some ideas that include triggering (via midi ) pre-recorded audio
clips, or files,  or possibly samples from a CD.
In a software environment, like Live6 or Max/msp,  would you need a
sample-player VST plug-in ?  or can the host be triggered to play them.
Once they are playing, I'd want to process them, loop them etc.
