email's advantage is that you can store it and make your own personal
backup of it.

Using Gmail or another threaded email client makes reading this list
pretty much just like a forum.
don't read those that you don't like.

yeah, sure you can do the same thing on forums, but i've tended to
find forums to be less about discussions on the topic and more about
post-whoring.

problems with forums are the server needs to be far more powerful than
is required for a simple mailing list, and then storage.
