It might be worth mentioning that the choices are not only "hardware-only" 
or "laptop" but also VST-like software effect plug-ins provided on 
designated rack-hardware, like i.e. TC electronics PowerCore:

I guess what we will see in future is a stronger blend between software 
and hardware (designated rack but also physical controllers etc...)
