I'd like to make a case for the dedicated hardware approach.

Lately I have been using the EH 2880 looper. It has one particular 
design philosophy that I like: No multi-function buttons or knobs. 
Each knob and each button performs one function only.  No menues, no 
'virtual' knobs.  This device has encouraged me to pull out my 
stompboxes again... more knobs!
