Why should a musician disguise that he "hasn't much to say with his
music"?[snipette]
What sometimes makes me feel bad is the culture that makes us expect
certain things from artists. And even worse; when some artists
internalize these expectation and kind of starts to pretend as if
they are doing something different than they are. That's just sad.<<

I totally totally agree.
I didn't say or mean to imply that such "nothing much to say"-ness was a bad thing, just that it happens & is occasionally hidden by a dazzling display of technique.

it's like having a dictionary-like grasp of one's language but not being able to tell a story with all those words; it doesn't make you any less interesting or worthwhile.

jeez.... aren't we all a bit PC, though, avoiding offence or value judgements like this? I'm going to stick my neck out (for a change)- nik, I personally would take "hot for teacher" over anything on the last "king crimson" album. there, I've said it. :-)

I never liked any of frank zappa's records but I thought his "in his own words" book was great.

duncan.
