EDP's are CD quality, 16 bit, 44.1kHz.  

RF's been using tc 2290's and Eventide stuff which probably has
higher-quality a/d converters.  I wouldn't be surprised if the entire
audio path on those units is of higher quality than the EDP.

Or, maybe the blinking lights just make it seem better.
