rik maclean's *ping things* CD Reviews

"Reprise" by Portal

I've always enjoyed the sound of the shoegazer movement out
of the UK in the early 90's. Typically involving processed guitar
(heavy on the chorus) and hypnotic repeated melodies, the
scene was responsible for some truly wonderful albums that
were the soundtrack to my youth. "Reprise" by Portal follows
in the footsteps of the shoegazers, bringing back memories of
another time...

Building on looped melodies and sparse percussion, "Selene"
is a hypnotic piece that draws the listener into the disc.
"Second Thought" follows, a vocal piece with an archetypical
shoegazer aesthetic. Beautiful this one...

"Shifting" whirls and chmes, a spirralling chorus of guitar.
"Lost" is a bass driven percussive piece ever swirling, turning,
but never twirling. Arpeggiated guitar floats throughout
"Before the Storm". Bliss.

Appropriately enough the disc closes with the track
"Last Goodbye" another vocal piece that floats and drifts
just beyond the senses.

Truly wonderful work, sure to appeal to fans of the shoegazer genre.
