I own/use a SP-303 and find it pretty acceptable. I do not use the 
sequencer though. Haven't even tried it. It has nothing to do with
the unit in question though. I have 2 or 3 other devices that have
onboard sequencers and I don't use those either. It's just not a
part of my M.O. 

As for sample editing, I find it much more convenient and creatively 
satisfying to do that on a computer anyway. I searched for a cheap 
sampler that would allow me to import sound files from a 
computer in some fashion and found that the SP-303 fit the bill
reasonably well.
