Yes, records were there before tape. Names: Edgard Varese, Pierre 
Schaeffer,
Pierry Henry, Olivier Messiaen. Schaeffer did the first Musique Concrete
piece in 1948, using recordings. Varese did the first Musique Concrete 
piece
using tapes in 1954.
